Barter

Before money, there was barter: you have something I want, I have something you want, so we swap. Simple — until you look closely.

Imagine a village with no money. A baker wants shoes. A cobbler wants a chicken. A farmer wants bread. For the baker to get shoes, they must find a cobbler who happens to want bread right now. Every trade requires two people whose wants line up exactly, at the same time, in the right amounts.

Where barter breaks down

  • Matching. You must find someone who both has what you want and wants what you have. As a village grows, the odds of that double match collapse.
  • Divisibility. What if a cow is worth 40 loaves of bread, but you only want one loaf? You can’t hand over 1/40th of a live cow.
  • No common measure. How many chickens is a pair of shoes? Every pair of goods needs its own exchange rate, and there are a staggering number of pairs.
  • Storage over time. A farmer’s wealth is in grain and livestock that rot, sicken, or must be fed. You can’t easily save this year’s surplus to spend in ten years.

The number of exchange rates in a barter economy grows explosively. With just 10 goods there are 45 pairs to price; with 100 goods, 4,950; with 1,000 goods, nearly half a million. A shared unit collapses all of that into one price per good.

The pressure that creates money

These frictions push every trading society toward the same solution: pick one good that almost everyone will accept, and price everything in terms of it. You no longer need the other person to want what you have — you just need them to accept the common good, because they know they can spend it onward.

That single, most-tradeable good is the beginning of money. But which good? To answer that we first have to name the exact problem barter fails at — the coincidence of wants — and then the properties that make one good a better money than another.
